  • Wednesday 9:27 AM Amazon (AMZN) announces a licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures that will bring hundreds of well-known movies to its Prime Instant Video service over the next few years. The service now has over 17K titles in its arsenal after counting movies and individual TV episodes. (PR)

  • Monday 2:29 PM Bill Gurley defends Facebook's (FB -9.3%) weak post-IPO showing by pointing out Amazon (AMZN) fell below its IPO price shortly after its 5/17/97 offering, and didn't move above until 7/6. Of course, Amazon was worth less than $1B at the time, whereas Facebook is worth $95B today. TechCrunch founder-turned-VC Mike Arrington says he just bought some Facebook shares. (earlier)

  • Monday 9:12 AM Death by Amazon: Historic book publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt files for bankruptcy in order to try to eliminate a whopping $3B in debt. The company made a late bid to jump into the electronic books market with an Amazon (AMZN) publishing deal, but couldn't make headway with the debt it piled up while hardcover book sales plummeted due in large part to the influence of its newfound partner.
