Healthcare Reform and the Bottom Line [View article]
I made no representation about the effectiveness of government services - I simply recounted a personal experience with which I was familiar to try to learn why it was as it was. The surgeries were laser eye surgery and cataract surgery, both not covered by insurance for the individuals involved. One is "cosmetic", although correcting myopia is not really cosmetic since it does not change the appearance from can also be achieved with contact lenses and the other is considered medically necessary.
Perhaps these experiences have less to do with government healthcare and more to do with other factors of efficiency. And they are two specific examples and can not be extrapolated to a population.
I have met several (half a dozen) Canadians here in North Carolina and all have said they wished they had Canadian healthcare. One of them cited cost of their insurance. I didn't have your $4,000 per person tax cost to discuss with them. All the others complained that they were unable to get or could not afford insurance and therefore could not access standard healthcare services. Again, I did not have the tax burdens to compare in discussion with these folks.
I am talking anecdotal items here. Some foundation (Roberts Woods Johnson maybe?) should fund an impartial study of the inefficiencies of healthcare in the U.S. and Canada.
